Honor of Kings from Tencent was the second highest earning mobile game by worldwide revenue for January 2020 with more than $151.3 million in gross revenue, which represented 25 percent year-over-year growth from January 2019. The next top grossing mobile games were Candy Crush Saga from King, followed by AFK Arena from Lilith Games and Clash of Clans from Supercell.
AFK Arena was one of January’s fastest risers, generating $88.3 million following its launch in China last month. That was nearly three times the revenue of its previous best ever month in August 2019, when it accumulated $31.2 million. About 70.8 percent of user spending in January came from China, nearly overtaking lifetime revenue of the game’s current top grossing country to date, the U.S.
Another of Lilith Games’ titles, Rise of Kingdoms, also had its best month ever in January, earning $63.1 million. It means the Chinese publisher stands alongside Tencent as the only company to have two games in the top 10 overall revenue rankings worldwide. It serves as a reminder of just how much influence the Chinese market has on global user spending levels.
